Look out for a new concept in Friday evening entertainment from the end of August at the Protea Hotel, Wanderers. Anyone who likes to listen to live music, eat good food and indulge in cocktails (and who doesn’t like all that? šŸ˜‰ ) will enjoy the offeringsĀ these evenings will bring.

The Co-Lab Network launched these Live@The Big Apple events last weekend. The theme for the evening was Latin Passion, and who better to shake his lovely Latin loins than Cito, accompanied by his Wonderboom bandmate Martin Schofield in their Spanish incarnation, El Cantante. That evening they were joined by brilliantĀ percussionist, Tomasito Dyani as they played Spanish songs that hail from Cito’s Puerto Rican roots.

There were blue cocktails and a barman making interesting concoctions with Absolut (sponsors for the night) and lots of sugary syrups and oak smoke. I know. I didn’t really understand them myself, but they were delicious. The food served was small, bite-sized portions of deliciousness – chicken curries, delicious carb-free dishes, veggie sushis. I was too busy trying to get them into my mouth to remember to take some pics, but trust me, they looked good too.

So here’s the concept: Every other month, R200 prepaid (or R230 at the door) will get you entry to the event, which covers the evening’s entertainment, cocktails and a three course gourmet snacks. These are all paired to go with the theme of the evening. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

They set up a stage on the pool, which looked amazing. One of those new age tents that you see in chill areas at festivals covered the outdoor area, and they did provide outdoor gas heaters to warm areas that the cocktails didn’t reach. I think that in summer this will be an amazing venue to have a Friday evening’s entertainment. Oh, and added to the deal, Protea will throw in a special of R700 per room (per person sharing) if you don’t feel like trekking home, or if you enjoyed a few too many cocktails. You could plan a little holiday close to home or a sneaky honeymoon.
