Last night I had the pleasure of going to the opening of The Sheds at 1 Fox Street in Ferreirastown. The Sheds is the newest kid on the Inner-City-trendy-market-place block, and it’s gorgeous! It’s a perfect specimen of urban recycling – the old warehouse has been repurposed in a way that is aesthetically very pleasing.
The Sheds is the brainchild of Gerald Garner, whom you might have seen me mention before. Gerald is an awesome ambassador for Johannesburg and regularly takes people on walks through the inner city. This project will see the market space open initially from Thursday to Sunday from 10 – 6. They will only open in the evenings for special functions. Check out their website on: http://www.1fox.co.za
While not all their stallholders have been moved in yet – this is a phased process – so far they have an interesting array of stalls. Balkan Burgers (of course) and happy.me have more permanent stalls, as does an interesting African craft store. There are delicious tacos and Indian foods, and tasty looking titbits for sale. The Good Luck bar was a hit too! I particularly liked a stall which sold clothes, jewellery and accessories, much of which was made from recycled plastic. Apparently they have a bigger shop at the Soweto Theatre, so I’ll have to get there soon.
Last night’s function was a fundraiser for the Starfish Greathearts Foundation. This special charity looks after children who have been orphaned, and runs on the idea that each one counts. They had a fantastic band playing – Runaway Train Cult – and the craft beer was flowing in the beer hall – fantastic evening! It was also the first night of the Joburg City Festival which is running this weekend, which has a fantastic advertising campaign – Go to Town! I strongly recommend that you do. Tonight is the Vodacom In The City gig (which I’m lucky enough to have won tickets to!) and there are performances by Johnny Clegg at the Wits Great Hall and Pieter Dirk Uys at the Market Theatre. If you haven’t been to town recently, I think this weekend will be an excellent time to escape your suburban hell and experience the awesomeness which is Joburg.
